Rewiring Lamps

In an average household you will typically find numerous table and floor lamps at various locations throughout the home. Many times a lamp’s cord will get frayed or needs to be replaced for various other reasons. Wouldn’t it make life a lot easier if you, the homeowner, could repair this faulty lamp cord yourself? Now you can -- in this newsletter we will be discussing the step-by-step process used to repair lamp cords.

Repairing lamp cords may seem like a difficult task at first glance, but the key components of repairing lamp cords are divided up into four simple steps:

The first step in repairing a lamp cord is to unplug the lamp from the wall outlet and remove the light bulb, socket, and harp. After you have removed the necessary items, disconnect the old lamp cord from the socket and cut off the plug and one inch of cord. Then attach the old cord to the new cord by using tape or string, keeping in mind that the “splice” needs to be thin enough to fit back up through the center rod of the lamp. After you have joined the two cords together rethread the old cord through the center rod until you can pull the new cord to the top.

Moving on to the second step, cut the old cord off and discard it. On the new cord, tie an Underwriter’s knot leaving 2 1/2” for each wire (or enough you see fit to work with). From the end of each wire, you will need to strip 1/2” of insulation. This will finish step two.

Beginning step three, take the strands of wire and twist them with your fingers. Once you have done this, shape the wires into hooks by using needle-nose pliers. Take the newly made hooks and wrap them clockwise around the terminal screws so they’ll pull together as the screw is tightened. Tuck in any loose strands as you tighten the screws.

Note: Black wire (smooth coated) to brass terminal; White wire (rib coated) to silver terminal.

Finally, reassemble the socket, attach the harp, and replace the light bulb. To the end of the cord you can now attach a new plug. You have now just completed your first lamp-rewiring project. Congratulations!
