Tin Ceilings 411In this newsletter we are going to cover the most frequently asked questions about tin ceilings:
ENVIRONMENT “Can a tin ceiling withstand being put in a bathroom, and how do you protect them in this environment?” Yes, it can withstand a hot steamy bathroom. To protect the tin ceiling tiles it is recommended that you apply a lacquer coating to the panels. STRIPPING PAINT “How do you strip paint from tin ceilings?” There are many different ways to strip your tin ceiling, but we have narrowed it down to three options:
Option 1: Removing several layers of paint can be difficult, but by using oven cleaner it becomes much easier. Apply a layer of oven cleaner to the tin ceiling and use a plastic putty knife to clean the loosened layers. Apply another layer of oven cleaner while using a stiff plastic bristle brush to get into the crevices. Apply as many layers as you see fit until you can take a damp rag to wipe the whole surface to get rid of the residue. Waiting 2 hours after applying the oven cleaner should be enough time to let the paint loosen, but don’t wait any longer then that because the cleaner will leave poc marks on the tin. Also, remember to lay plastic sheeting on the floor because the oven cleaner will eat into hardwood floors. Do not forget to wear protective eyewear. The cleaner, if gotten in the eye, could do serious damage up to and including loss of sight.
RUST ”How do you remove rust from tin ceilings?” If you want to cover up rust on your tin ceiling, prime it with a metal primer and put two coats of finish paint on it. But if you want to get rid of the rust stains, rub the area with super fine steel wool or a brass wire brush. After the rust is removed, wash the tin piece in hot, soapy water, rinse well, and dry thoroughly. Using a thin coat of paste wax that contains camba, will help prevent rust.
