Renewing a Deck

PROJECT BASICS

Tools and Materials
Brushes
Planer/belt sander
Bleach
Wood Sealer
Galvanized Screws
Pressure Washer
Stiff-bristled brush
Steel rake
Hammer
Stain

Project: Moderate
Estimated Project Time: 2 days
Start Tips: Decide whether to use a solid stain or semitransparent stain.

1.) Semitransparent stain:
      a. Allows grain to show through
      b. Hides gray
      c. Lasts up to 3 years
2.) Solid Stain
      a. Covers the grain
      b. Adds a few years to deck's life
      c. Helpful on aging wood

Safety Tips: Wear goggles and old clothes when washing the deck with bleach.
Recommendation: Do-it-Yourself

Eventually, the ultraviolet rays from the sun will cause fading on your deck no matter what finish you use. Exposure to water along foot-worn paths can cause rot and other problems. You will need to give your deck a fresh layer of protection before it deteriorates any further, and we are here to help take you through the step-by-step process to achieve that.

There are six basics steps to renewing your deck:

1.) Eliminate Protruding Nails
2.) Replace the Nails with Screws (if desired)
3.) Make All Board Edges Flush with the Deck Surface
4.) Scrub the deck with a Bleach Solution
5.) Wash the Deck
6.) Seal the Deck

1.) Eliminate Protruding Nails
To find protruding nails, drag the back of a rake over the deck. When you find protruding nails, either hammer them flush with the deck surface or pull them out and replace them with screws.

2.) Replace the Nails with Screws (if desired)
You will want to do this if you want greater holding power. Use galvanized screws that are about ½ inch longer than the nails were.

3.) Make All Board Edges Flush with the Deck Surface
With a belt sander or hand planer, sand or shave raised edges, but make sure you avoid gouging or splintering the wood. You can avoid this by using a light touch.

4.) Scrub the deck with a Bleach Solution
With a solution of one-cup bleach per gallon of water, bleach gray or dirty wood with a stiff-bristled scrub brush.

5.) Wash the deck
With a pressure washer, power-wash the deck, but make sure you use caution to avoid damaging soft wood.

6.) Seal the Deck
Once the deck is clean, apply a wood preservative or stain. Make sure the deck is dry before adding the sealer.

We now leave you with a nice renewed deck that you can be proud of! Congratulations! (Click on underlined words for link to product.)
