No matter if you are giving your dresser a complete makeover or simply updating dresser hardware to give it a bit of a different feel, there is a lot to consider. For instance, do you know if it is best to purchase new furniture legs or will the existing ones match the new look? Would you prefer to switch out knobs for pulls or vice versa? How much are you willing to spend on the project?
The point is that there are a slew of questions that immediately arise when contemplating even simple projects like updating dresser hardware.
As far as just updating the hardware goes, here are some of the most important things to contemplate and keep in mind.
Shop Furniture Hardware and Give Your Dresser a New Look and Feel1. Functionality
Considering the usability of your new dresser hardware is essential. While looks are important, you want to make sure that your new knobs or pulls are easy and comfortable to grip as well.
Additionally, since you will be scrutinizing their functionality, it is also important to take a moment to consider orientation. While most dressers that feature pulls have them mounted horizontally, there are some which will also have doors with vertical ones as well. Therefore, when mulling over your selection(s), be sure to account for the orientation of the hardware, too.
2. Size
When updating dresser hardware, size is an important consideration. If you are thinking about purchasing larger or smaller knobs or pulls, make sure that they are easy to grab and that they won’t catch on any clothing or damage another piece of furniture nearby.

Additionally, if you are replacing pulls on your dresser, you will also need to measure the distance between the attachment points to ensure that the new ones are not too large or small.
When purchasing new hardware for your dresser, the package will list this information as the “Center to Center'' dimension (often abbreviated as “CC”) or as “drill centers.” If you want to make the project as quick and simple as possible, it is recommended that you purchase hardware with the same CC as you currently have, unless you are okay with filling existing holes and drilling new ones (more on that later).
3. Price
As with any DIY project, you will need to take the price into consideration. As far as updating dresser hardware is concerned, there are two main elements that will impact the outcome, namely style and quantity.
First, if you opt to purchase some high-quality antique hardware to give your bedroom dresser a more rustic feel, that is going to cost more than some red plastic knobs for a kid’s dresser. Second, the number of knobs or pulls that are required will potentially increase the cost as well.
4. Appearance
While the style of hardware you select will partially dictate the price, it is necessary to match the appearance of the hardware with the style of the dresser.
For instance, you do not want to purchase some cheap plastic knobs to put on an antique dresser. Therefore, it is important to consider the style and appearance of the hardware you buy for the project.

If this situation proves to be true, then you must be ready to fill some holes, drill some new ones and sand and paint (or stain) your dresser drawers. Fortunately, this process is relatively simple and requires little skill to manage.
Updating Your Dresser Hardware
While updating dresser hardware is not a difficult project (even if you change hardware styles), it does require a bit of planning and forethought.
By keeping these five things in mind when planning to update your dresser’s hardware, the project should go smoothly and as anticipated.
