Restorers Spade Strap Hinge


Crafted like their antique counterparts, Restorers Spade Strap Hinges feature authentic styling and distinctive finish options. Since these straps are handmade, measurements and working tolerances may vary. For heavy or often used doors, we recommend using a faux strap in conjunction with a coordinating butt hinge. Perfect for gates, sheds and other rustic applications. Matching mounting hardware included. 6", 12", 18", and 24" lengths available.

  • Rust: Raw iron that has been oxidized. This finish will continue to rust over time and will rub off. This finish can be preserved by sealing with furniture wax or a clear coat sealant.
  • Black Powder Coat: A baked-on finish that is virtually maintenance free. This finish is more shiny than Oil Blackened and is permanent.
  • Oil Blackened: Raw iron coated with oil. The oil will wear and expose the iron beneath which will rust. Left as is, this finish will erode, or rub off. This can be prevented by sealing with furniture wax or a clear coat sealant.
  • Hand forged items may vary slightly and variations in size and finish should be expected.

Hinge pins are undersized and that means too much play/slop in the hinge

Hinge pins are significantly undersized resulting in too much play/slop in the hinge. To get my gate to hang level, I had to drop the hinge arm all the way down and then fasten it in. The result is a mounting that looks off. If the manufacturer would use the correct size pin in the hinges, this wouldn't be an issue.

Hinge pins are undersized and there’s too much slop

The hinges would be great but for the undersized hinge pins that allow for way too much movement. This required mounting the hinges in an odd manner to account for the drop due to the slop between the hinge and the pin. It seems like a manufacturing defect or a QA/QC issue. I strongly recommend that VanDykes address the issue with their overseas manufacturer. Were it not for that issue, I’d be thrilled.

Screws are undersized

The hinge construction and quality look great, but the screws included are small and short. If you are planning to use these hinges for heavier gates/doors you will likely need to get larger screws and drill out the screws holes to accommodate.
