Why did we ever stop using this design?

I was hoping this style would make it easier for my young children to replace the toilet paper roll. It is easier for everyone, which means we are less likely to find an empty holder. If you use double rolls the paper will roll off slowly for the first few uses, but this hasn't been a major problem. I want to switch my other holder to this style soon! I don't know why those spring loaded nightmares were invented.
